EMP VIOL CONSORT

Sarah Cunningham, Director

Our consort of alto, treble, tenor, and bass viols plays music spanning the 16th and 17th centuries, including contrapuntal fantasies, pieces based on vocal models, and dances.

Level: intermediate/advanced. Students wishing to learn the viol as beginners should request individual lessons from Sarah Cunningham sarahcunning@gmail.com and may join the consort in future semesters.

Three chansons by Claudin de Sermisy

Playing viola da gamba was such a highlight of my time at Princeton. I loved studying privately with Sarah Cunningham and playing under her direction in the viol consort. Sarah is patient, perceptive, and always encouraging. She’s a wonderful teacher for the absolute beginner as well as people with experience. And viol is a wonderful instrument to pick up for the first time at any age! (Molly Herron, ’21)
